YOU USE ME EVERYDAY..... HOW AM I MADE?
You use me everyday..... how am I made? Let me give you a clue, I'll tell you where it comes from.
......" people climb me, cut me and burn me ,my rings are not of gold but they do tell me age".....
Still don't know what it is? It's a tree. So, what comes from a tree that you use everyday ????? Paper!!! Ever stopped to think how paper is made?
VIRGIN PAPER MANUFACTURE
STEP 1
The tree is cut
STEP 2
The wood is turned into pulp. This can be done mechanically by using machines to grind the wood chips. It can also be done chemically by using
- Caustic soda, Sodium sulfide for the Kraft process.
- Sulfurous acid for the Sulfite process.
- Caustic soda, Anthraquinone for the Soda pulping.
STEP 3
Bleaching the pulp. Chemicals usually used are hydrogen peroxide( H2O2)or distilled peracetic acid(dPAA)
STEP 4
The pulp mixture is sieved and left to dry
STEP 5
The dried paper is passed through heated rollers and compressed into a continuous roll until the desired thickness is achieved.
RECYCLED PAPER MANUFACTURE
STEP 1
Recovered paper is used as the feed stock and mixed with water in a pulping vessel.
STEP 2
The resultant slurry is passed through a screen to remove dirt and other contaminants
STEP 3
Deinking. The most common forms of deinking are:
- Flotation deinking which uses chemicals such as surfactants and subsequent air introduction.
- Bleaching this is similar to the process in the virgin paper manufacture.
- Washing , here the pulp is diluted and washed on a wire screen.
STEP 4 & STEP 5 mentioned above are also applicable to recycled paper manufacture.
Recovered office paper has the highest flexibility for recycling as it has long cellulose fibers.
Before you rip up those sheets, or make more copies than you need, pause and remember that trees produce the oxygen that we desperately can not live without.
A big thank you to all ARBORISTS out there, who are they? Those are the professional tree care providers around the world.
