WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY'S PRICE?
The word "sustainable" continues to be affixed to many fields of endeavor. For example, Sustainable Agriculture, Sustainable Banking, Sustainable Engineering, Sustainable Real estate, the list goes on. But what does it truly mean? The most quoted definition of sustainable development is from the Bruntdland Report/ Our Common Future.
- " Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs".
In other wards, Sustainability means addressing present needs, whilst putting those of the future into perspective. This requires, continuous commitment, and most often than not, twice the effort. So why bother?
In order to "stay alive", people need food, warmth and shelter. Businesses need to be profitable. It can be said, most people alive today, will still want to be alive tomorrow. Same goes for businesses.Simply put, staying alive, means being adaptable to the environment. So, if today is the present, and tomorrow the future, sustainability equals survival.
The environment makes it possible, for people to survive and businesses thrive. Devising ways, and making choices, to ensure this continues is certainly worthwhile,if not wise don't you think? The question should be, WHAT IS THE PRICE FOR SURVIVAL?
SO NOW YOU KNOW!!!!!
